The sapwood is preferred over the heartwood, ranging from nearly white to off-white cream, sometimes with reddish or golden hues, while the heartwood is darker reddish brown. The grain is generally straight but can be wavy, with a fine, even texture. Non-durable to perishable and susceptible to insect attack. It is fairly easy to work with but can burn when machined with high-speed cutters. It turns, glues, and finishes well, though blotching can occur when staining. No characteristic odor but can cause skin irritation and respiratory effects. It is moderately priced, with figured pieces being more expensive. The species is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List. Common uses include flooring, veneer, paper, musical instruments, cutting boards, butcher blocks, workbenches, baseball bats, and other specialty wood items.
